Even before I can completely get out of my car, he blocks my way, his tail moving rhythmically from side to side while his nose clearly can’t get enough of the aroma of the hot chicken and rice that I bring him every Sunday. “It’s you again!” his glistening eyes seem to say. He waits for me every week, believing I’ll come, even with no guarantee. He smirks as I crouch down to give him his Sunday supper. The furry little guy seems confused as to why he is happy. Is it because he finally see’s a human without a stone in their hands, with kindness instead of cruelty in their eyes or because of what I bring with me. He tells me things that I don’t even imagine when my phone charging. That sleeping with someone on the pavement feels like heaven compared to sleeping alone. That kindness has a distinct smell. “What’s with this t-shirt that you wear every time you come to see me?” His soft eyes seem to ask, gazing at my Roots t-shirt with the Aquaterra logo on it. “This represents my gang. The ones I call family and spread the quiet magic with.” Just like me, I think he can be a bit dramatic sometimes. “Have I told you about how I chased off a goat once?” Yes. Thrice. But I listen anyway, because I may have others to share with, but he only has me. Sometimes I think to myself, “He’s a bit crazy. I wonder how he doesn’t have trust issues yet.” Then I come out of my thoughts, distracted again by his smile. I swear he smiles. Every time he smiles, his lips widen and his eyes become smaller. His name is whatever they call him. But to me, he’s kindness wrapped in golden brown fur, with his arched tail filling the void of a bow. We might not speak the same language, but we understand each other quite well, through head tilts, in a trust built over time and treats. I realised. Kindness isn’t always big gestures. Sometimes it’s just rice in a box. A roof over your head when the sky is pouring. A wagging tail greeting you after a long day. And as long as Aquaterra walks these streets, kindness will too.Aquaterra has many more wagging tails waiting out there - healing hearts one bowl at a time
